Spirit Bank is an independent, full service community bank based in Oklahoma. Shawn Henry is the bank’s Network Administrator, and he wanted to streamline backup operations for over 25 Windows servers with 2 Terabytes of data. Daily tape-only backups were taking over 11 hours, and jobs were failing due to over-use of tape. He evaluated several disk-based solutions in search of greater reliability and efficiency, and after considering products from HP, Compaq, Dell, and others, Shawn purchased two miSAN R Series from Cybernetics.
With the release of miSAN, a tiered disk-disk-tape data protection strategy became an affordable option for virtually every site, but a particularly attractive choice for sites like Sprit Bank, where high availability and the utmost data security are critical. ”We are currently utilizing our miSAN for a DFS structure and D2D2T backup within two of our core locations,” says Henry. “And the miSAN still has the ability to do more!” Indeed, flexibility is one of the hallmarks of the multi-purpose R Series, which can be configured for use as an IP SAN, a DFS NAS, an NFS mount point, and D2D2T backup in just 2U of rack space.
The R Series is full featured, and when configured as a DFS NAS can deliver replication and snapshot functionality. Snapshots are Exchange and SQL Server application aware for roll back protection of critical files and databases, and integration with Windows Active Directory ensures support for DFS Namespaces as well as load sharing. The DFS Replication feature utilizes remote differential compression to replicate only changes to files, which boosts performance across slower WAN connections. An ArcServe option supports Exchange, SQL Server, and a wide variety of other applications as well as bare metal disaster recovery.

Based on iSCSI disk technology, the miSAN R Series allows network computers to realize the redundancy of RAID storage from one centralized location. And miSAN is as easy to install, as it is easy to use. It simply connects to the Ethernet network and presents block level disk space to a variety of Windows, UNIX, or Linux operating systems. Customers can monitor operations and backup resources using intuitive on-board software, and backup to tape can be performed at will or on any designated schedule.
Available with an integrated high performance tape drive for up to 4.5 TB of disk capacity and up to 1.2 TB on each removable tape, the miSAN R Series also features two LVD SCSI ports for external connection of a tape drive or tape library and disk capacity of up to 9 TB. Because miSAN works seamlessly with off-the-shelf software packages that provide support for SCSI devices, there is little need for additional training and customers can realize miSAN’s benefits right away.
